Contention for being Content

“Enough” is realizing that an insatiable appetite for more — will push you to the point of regret — The Psychology of Money

A decade ago, the 90s kid argued in favour of social media, and said that social media is breaking boundaries, connecting people, re-establishing networks, blah this and blah that. A decade after that thought, the same 90s kid feels that social media has become a bane, rather than a boon. The 90s kid feels that to come across as “glamourous” or “happening” on social media, there is

  1. TMI (Too Much Information, for the un-initiated)
  2. A sense of privilege
  3. A lot of pretense and portrayal of inaccurate information — be it showcasing lifestyle, work, personal life, things happening, food we eat, dress we wear

This brings me to the quote at the beginning of this article. We keep listening to one liners like, “Appreciate what you have”, “Live in the moment”. What happens with social media is, we tend not to appreciate what we have, and not live in the moment; rather, live in the future, or the past; and also tend to yearn for what we don’t have, but others portray to have. Sure, one might argue that not everything is false; and I agree. But the flipside is, not everything is true either; and as the saying goes “All that glitters is not gold”

I will use a simple example to make this point. Recently, we had been to a tiger reserve, of course, to spot tigers.
Here are my observations from the Content trip —

The naturalist made it abundantly clear that we should not think of spotting a tiger as the aim of the safari. We should rather enjoy what’s available, and treat a tiger spotting as a bonus. This was on our third safari, which was also the final one. On the previous two safaris, we were unlucky, and didn’t spot a tiger.

However, our whole time in those safaris was spent in regret, at the missed opportunity of not spotting a tiger, at the thought of not being able to upload Oscar worthy videos on Instagram. But, after listening to our naturalist, the experience in the third safari changed completely.

We started to enjoy the weather, the experience, rush and excitement of hoping to spot a tiger. We ended up spotting some pretty birds, and other animals; which were available before as well, but we didn’t pay attention. And the cherry on the cake? We ended up spotting a tiger as well, that too while it was enjoying her prey! Look, what I’m saying is, that in the yearning for something, we lose what we have.

The experience of sitting in a jeep in the dark in cold breeze was amazing, but in hindsight! Why? Because we didn’t spot a tiger, and were consumed by the disappointment, of not getting lovely pics to show to friends and family

While we did spot a tiger, and a couple of us were busy appreciating the nature and its ways of working, some people in the Jeep up front were busy trying to find the best pose for their selfies, moving around the jeep, moving the jeep around and clicking unnecessary amount of selfies and photos.

Now, I am no one to judge them, and it’s their choice. I am just placing myself in their shoes, and I wonder, if I had gotten caught up in clicking pictures for memories, or for social media, the intangible memories, and mental notes that the mind makes in such moments would’ve been lost! Sure, even I ended up posing for some pictures, I mean, who doesn’t, right? But the main objective of the time then was, to observe the tiger, the nature, and be in the moment, rather than consumed with the idea of getting the right angle for the selfie

In my limited opinion, it’s just important that we realize the importance of not getting caught up in the race, but be in the moment. And realize that it is “Enough” to just be the way we are, in the moment we are!
