THINGS WILL BE FINE, HANG IN THERE
“Great things come from hard work and perseverance. No excuses” – Kobe Bryant
I am a cricket fan. There is another article I have written on why ‘83 is a great movie. In this blog, I’d like to use cricket as a central idea, to talk about perseverance and hard work.
2014 – With a victory in the 2011 World Cup, we entered the T20 World Cup final, against our neighbour, Sri Lanka, once again. However, fate had something else in store for us, and we didn’t win this cup.
2019 – Semis:
That fateful run out is still etched in our minds. I remember I was at the airport in Indore, and the match was being screened on the airport screens. All was pushed out of the mind, as I saw Dhoni lose his wicket. I was travelling for some business meetings, and beneath the formal shirt, I had the India jersey on.
2021 – ICC World Test Championship :
The first world test championship, and India has a chance to avenge the runout of 2019. It’s India v/s New Zealand, once again! The stage is set. But alas, as luck would have it, after an outstanding run throughout the series, our journey was cut short, and, we lost.
2023 – ICC World Test Championship :
It’s India v/s Australia. A matchup, made in heaven. Riding on a strong test performance, and with India, having outdone their past team members in terms of fitness, redefining their pace attack, get down in the battle, ahem, playing field. As luck would have it, Travis Head comes to the party, and we lose this one, again.
2023 – 19th November:
All of us felt, the night had come, when India would once again, get hands on the World Cup. In the press conference, Pat Cummins had mentioned that he would not love anything more than silencing the home team on their turf. With the form our beloved team was in, and with Kohli having broken Tendulkar’s record, no one had dreamt that Travis Head would break a billion hearts, twice, on the same day – one, when he caught our Hitman, and the other, when he bulldozed his way to the century.
2024 – 29th June :
As I sit at our centre, browsing through some videos about cricket, Chak De India plays on speakers in the background. I can’t help but wonder, what would have happened, if the catch would have been dropped. Today, we face off South Africa, who are themselves on the lookout for the trophy. Various memes, like Generational Chokers v/s Decade Chokers are doing the rounds on social media. But, let us take a moment, and appreciate the grit and resilience both the teams have shown, to pave their way into the finals. One final encounter, one final match. It will take a lot of effort and energy to forget the scars from the previous encounter, but with the hope, that we get our hands on the trophy, let us enter the World Cup final.
If, at an international level, so much dedication, perseverance, grit, and wait is possible, then, let us, as students, take a moment, and appreciate the hard work sportsmen and sportswomen put into their games. As Federer put it in his speech, people just see the point that is won. No one remembers the rally that goes into winning the point. And once a point is won, it is onto the next point.
We, as students, preparing for one exam after the other, let us not forget this! What goes into a memorable outcome and result, is one step, one problem, one task, one day at a time. The journey is long, but the journey is worth it, and is beautiful, provided we do it the right way – One step at a time, with a clear goal in our minds.
If sports has taught me anything, it’s this. The journey is determined by the hard work, grit and perseverance. However, the destination or the result is driven by luck, which is not in our hands. If we get worked up about our luck, we will never be able to put in the hard work, to complete the journey. Also, they are only fools, who will put in their everything into the journey, to finally leave the result in the hands of luck. But then, isn’t that what makes the journey, and the destination both worth it?
